In 1997, historian Robert Gagnon wrote an influential paper entitled : Pour en finir avec un mythe : le refus des écoles catholiques d’accepter les immigrants. Immigration, education and language have been controversial in Quebec since the 1960s. The percentage of immigrants students enrolled in French Catholic schools declined steeply between the 1930s and the 1970s. But why? Did immigrants increasingly reject French Catholic schools? Or did French Catholic schools increasingly reject immigrants? Researchers on this topic have consulted bureaucrats, administrators, historians and statisticians. No one has consulted parents and students. They are the primary focus of this research project.
