Protecting Language Rights : Overview of the Commissioner's Interventions in the Courts: 2006-2016
Abstract
The intent of this report is to inform the public,
federal institutions and Parliament as to how the
Commissioner of Official Languages has exercised
his powers throughout the years. It details the
factors that lead the Commissioner to file legal
proceedings himself or to participate as intervener,
as well as the profound and lasting effects that
his participation can have on the judicial process.
The report also contains, for the benefit of the
Government of Canada, parliamentarians and
federal institutions, findings that should be taken
into consideration in order to promote better
dialogue on language rights and ultimately to
strengthen the country’s linguistic duality.
